CARE INFORMATION
Unpack your seed potatoes as soon as they arrive and place them in a single layer in a wooden tray, egg box etc, place the end with the most eyes upwards, and stand the trays in a light, cool but frost free place. The shoots start to grow which is called 'chitting', most gardeners think this process gives them a head start when you plant them out. Plant them out in good soil (fork in some manure if you have it) during March/April 10cm deep, 45cm between each tuber and 75cm between each row. Alternatively you can grow potatoes in a large pot, plastic sacks of compost with holes in the side for drainage, grow bags or potato barrels. Growing in pots/bags is especially good for new potatoes, 2 or 3 tubers per pot, 7 or 8 in a sack, gro-bag or barrel. As they grow pull up the soil around the young shoots (but don't cover the tops) two or three times during the summer, this is called 'earthing up' and it helps you get a better crop! New potatoes are ususally harvested as soon as they are big enough to eat. Later crops are ready when the foliage starts going yellow, you can leave them in the ground for a few more weeks or dig them up and store them in a sack
