Calluna vulgaris Allegro is a low growing heather with dark green, scaly foliage and spikes of carmine red flowers in summer and autumn. Makes an excellent groundcover plant which will help to suppress weeds. Perfectly frost hardy and good for exposed conditions, but they prefer full sun and need acidic soils, so incorporate plenty of ericaceous compost when planting, alternatively grow in pots of ericaceous compost. Calluna vulgaris Allegro has the RHS Award of Garden Merit. They look great in winter patio pots. All heathers should be cut back hard after flowering to keep them bushy. Give them a feed at the same time. Height to 35cm in 4 years.
