Raspberries a highly productive soft fruits which can be grown in the smallest garden space. Early varieties start fruiting in early summer, followed by mid-season, then late varieties and finally the autumn fruiting varieties extend the season into September and October. They are very cold tolerant so will grow anywhere in the UK but they prefer slightly acid soils so in alkaline areas improve the soil by digging in plenty of garden compost and/or well rotted farmyard manure
Raspberry Canes should be planted at 45cm (18") intervals in rows which are 2m (6') apart. The old canes are cut down after fruiting to leave room for the young canes which will fruit the following season. Normally the young canes are tied to horizontal wires stretched between wooden posts to prevent wind damage and to make harvesting easier
