Brown Turkey is by far the best fig for growing outdoors in the UK. It is very frost hardy and produces a heavy crop of large, sweet and juicy fruits. It does need a sunny sheltered spot and even then some small fruits may not ripen before the winter and they fall off. Brown Turkey should be grown like other fig trees, planted in fertile, well drained soil but with the roots restricted to encourage more fruit and less foliage. This can be done by planting it in a sunken pot or by lining the sides of the planting hole with paving slabs. Prune often to keep a reasonable size
