John Innes Composts are soil based composts which have been specially formulated with a mix of sterilised loam, peat and sand with essential plant nutrients for the potting of certain houseplants, herbaceous plants, trees and shrubs. John Innes No. 1 is suitable for young plants, No.2 has twice the nutrient content and is suitable for the final potting of most plants, John Innes No. 3 has three times the nutrient content of No.1 and is used for plants with high nutrient demands such as cucumbers, tomatoes, chrysanthemums etc. John Innes Composts are excellent for growing long-lived or woody plants like trees and shrubs. John Innes is not recommended for seed sowing, most houseplants or short lived, seasonal plants such as bedding plants, patio plants. In most instances you will get better results by mixing all John Innes Compost 50/50 with a good quality multipurpose compost to improve the air content.
