Honeysuckle - Lonicera

Honeysuckle is a native plant but has been grown as different varieties in English gardens for many hundreds of years, loved for it's heady scent from early evening onwards. Honeysuckle is very useful for shady places and moist soils. Honeysuckle needs little care, just light trimming a couple of times of year to stop it becoming overgrown. Tie in the strongest shoots to the framework or training wires. If you want a honeysuckle arch you will need to plant at least one plant at each side of the arch and cut one or two stems back to ground level each years.

Nowadays there are evergreen varieties available if you don't want to see bare stems in winter, plus a huge range of flower colour. Most honeysuckle have a very nice scent but for the strongest fragrance choose Early Dutch, Lonicera periclymenum Belgica, and Late Dutch Honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum Serotina
