Sarracenia purpurea or Huntsman Cup make popular carnivorous plants due their colourful pitchers and wonderful flowers every spring. When mature they make a clump of pitchers about 15cm tall and 15cm across, they are also one of the easiest carnivorous plants to grow. The pitchers have unusual markings which attracts a wide range of insects down to the bottom of the tube where they drown in a liquid, providing the plant with valuable nutrients. They are very cold tolerant and will survive outside in a bog garden provided it is sited in a sheltered spot
As with most carnivorous plants Sarracenia purpurea need moist, acidic soil conditions. To grow in a pot simply stand the pot in a saucer of rainwater, never use tap water or any plant feed. They also like a bright place without being exposed to full sun in the summer, a north or east facing windowsill is fine all year round. Re-pot when necessary in a mixture of sphagnum moss and peat, or specially formulated compost for insect eating plants
